About Us

Barry Horst started teaching eight years ago.  During his years in the classroom, he adapted many teaching and instructional techniques to his own style until he developed something that really stood out.  He noticed that his students performed much higher on state standardized tests than was their projected grade level, some even surpassed every other class in the school!

In 2008 Barry started Wired Minds Tutoring to instill a passion for learning in the hearts and minds of local students who struggled with a love for education, or who were not performing to their potential.

We currently have been told of students asking their parents to sign them up, students who ask to come in even on snow days, or holidays, and we even have students who pay for sessions out of their own pocket.

We owe our success first of all to God who has gifted every instructor here with a passion for teaching, but also to our undying pursuit of excellence.

In the tutoring field, it is not enough to be good at what you do.  To help our students succeed and excel, we must have the best instructors in town (if not the country).  We have become the leader in tutoring by setting a standard of excellence.  Other centers must now meet our standard of care and passion.  Though some have tried to copy some of our ideas and techniques, in the end it is the student who reaps the benefit!

Our Philosophy

Wired Minds has discovered that there is something significantly different about our center and the way we do things than anywhere else!  That's probably why we have been the recipient of the "Best of Greer" award for two years running, or why our students actually want to come here, or why we see such impressive results and get letters from parents all of the time!

We take a multi-pronged approach.  We work closely with teachers, parents, students, our instructors, and sometimes even individuals outside of Wired Minds!  We stop at nothing until we see results!

We individualize every student's lesson.  Every student is different, so why would we force them into a mold?  It just doesn't make sense to us.  Each student is unique, and therefore, our approach to each student is personal.  You will see us using new, and creative approaches for reaching each and every student we have.

We work 1:1, or in pairs.  We once tried a larger group than two and instantly decided it was not a good idea because we did not see the impressive results for which we are known!  Thus 1:1 or in pairs. and nothing bigger unless it is requested.

Lastly, We have discovered that there are three concepts that work well together to best educate our students. These are to engage, equip, and empower them.

First, engaging a student entails building a relationship with him or her to discover their strengths and areas of concern. Engaging the student allows our instructors to get to know the student so their tutoring can be more highly focused.  We have also found that because our tutors work on building relationships with their "tutee", our tutors often function as mentors as well.

The second step in our approach is to equip. Through equipping we discover tools that fit each student uniquely.  By making these tools available to our students and modeling how to use them, students can achieve greater success on their own (it's a great day when a student no longer needs to use our services!).

Our third step is to empower. Empowered students not only possess the tools they need, but they also have the knowledge and skills to use those tools. Often, this can happen so seamlessly, that the student believes that they and they alone are responsible for reaching their goals and that they have accomplished everything by themselves - this is OUR goal, and the student is wired for success!

Mission Statement

Wired Minds Tutoring is committed to rekindling the love of learning that burns in all of us.  Unfortunately in many, this fire has faded to a dim glow.  Wired Minds comes alongside students to help answer questions, encourage and challenge students, and help keep them focused.  With our help, a love for learning can once again burn with a raging passion in all students!
